Chapter 13

Eimile stared at the heating element above her. She had expected to ride into the Bertram Hive with Zortan and the rest of his soldiers. For days she had caused delays and was responsible for their slow pace, giving Frazour time to set up whatever trap he could devise.

To her horror, with so little distance to go, the group divided into two. She was forced to go with Zortan in a direction west of the hive. Shortly after they separated, a blanket was thrown over her head and she was once again shoved into a hole.

She was in some kind of underground silo encased in cement. It was as dark as the first room she had been thrown in after she was abducted. Within minutes of being trapped in her new prison, the heating element was turned on.

The temperature started to rise and sweat exited her body. For whatever reason, Zortan’s plan was to dehydrate her, stripping her of whatever power she had left. She was not going to be part of the initial strike to bring down the master, but to solidify the bastard’s new role as master of the Bertram Hive. After he took control, she would be brought before the hive, powerless and helpless.

When she had been a captive of Zortan’s before, Eimile never knew if she was going to be rewarded or punished. As the heating element continued to drain water from her body, she remembered his words. He threatened to punish her if she tried to escape. The heated coils were his way of telling her Zortan was aware she had purposely slowed their progress.

For some reason, Eimile thought of physics class. Mass was never lost. Water that left her body was still present. Beads of sweat covered her and reabsorbed into her body, but the remainder turned to gas.

Eimile experimented with various means to convert the humidity in the air to water she could pull back into her system. As a water elemental, it should be a breeze. What if she visualized in her mind soaking the humid air into her pores? Thank God she had not been placed in a dry sauna.

Eimile could feel her skin absorb the water in the air, sweat it out again, and then she repeated the process. Although the amount of water returning to her body fluctuated, the energy she took in continued to build. She was not sure what she would do with the power, but she continuously repeated the process.

After about an hour of regenerating the liquid she lost, a scraping sound disturbed her concentration. The noise came from above. Someone was opening the entry into the cylindrical space. To her surprise and utter relief, Drake appeared at the opening.

“I will throw down a rope you can climb,” Drake shouted. Eimile had not climbed a rope since gym class. She had always failed miserably, possessing no upper body strength. The experience had been humiliating and something she had never planned to repeat.

The promised rope was tossed from above.
